Job DescriptionChiquita Brands International, a leading international marketer and distributor of fresh and processed food products is currently seeking a Research Scientist for their R&D group located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The R&D Research Scientist is expected to effectively assist in the evaluation, qualification and optimization of new products and processes in the area of fruits and vegetables. Projects typically managed by the position holder will address significant innovations within the area of fruit and vegetables from freshly prepared to minimally or fully processed.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Work closely with Marketing and R&D to build well-structured test plans and protocols for the development of new products. Conceptualize and develop new product prototypes for multiple innovation projects. Develop new or improved ways of preserving, processing, packaging, storing, and delivering fresh fruits and vegetables. Improve existing products by optimizing processes and product attributes (organoleptic properties, cost, and nutritional profiles). Design and execute experiments and prepare results for review
Select raw materials, select equipment, define operational conditions, conduct trials, conduct shelf-life tests, and organize sensory and nutritional analyses. Conduct pilot plant trials under limited supervision. Assist with the operational implementation and scale up of new products
Maintain accurate and complete records, and report findings into technical documents. Develop finished product and processing specifications. Responsible for technical leadership, project planning and timing. Work closely with Sourcing, Operations, Quality, and Packaging groups.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MS degree in Food Science, Postharvest, or related field, with 3-5 years experience in new product development in the area of fruit and vegetable processing. Experience with product, package, and process design principles, in particular with shelf life stability and microbiological safety of fresh/processed produce. Experience with sensory analysis, culinary arts and/or nutritional labeling are desirable. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with technical/cross functional teams, internally and externally (e.g. research institutes, suppliers, laboratories, etc.). Practical knowledge of project management skills. Capable of original thought with the drive and energy to provide new ideas and approaches. Problem-solving ability to find innovative solutions and applications. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with strong emphasis in technical presentations and reports. Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast paced environment to produce commercially viable products. Excellent analytical skills, knowledge in statistical analysis, attention to detail and multi-tasking ability. Proficient in Microsoft Office Products
